Get Ready All

Get Ready All, Here comes one of those concerts to which so many of us look forward. A visit from our dear friend Nicholas McGegan is always a treat…both for his music making and for the joyful way in which he shares that music. Nic will lead CMSSL musicians in “From Baroque To Classical”, a program that presents music transitioning from the Baroque to the Classical period. We start with J.S. Bach’s (the father) 3rd Brandenburg Concerto. Then Charles Metz performs a short harpsichord work by Domenico Scarlatti who takes us to C. P. E. Bach (the son) who will take us to intermission. The second half features Bjorn Ranheim as soloist in a concert favorite, Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D. From there we finish with Mozart’s lively 29th Symphony. Our concerts with Nicholas McGegan are very popular so for best seating options, order tickets early. This is the last concert in our Buy One Get One Free promotion….. so get tickets for you, for your family, for your friends, for your families friends…well…you get the picture. (BOGO Promo Code –  WINTERMUSIC)    TICKETS  IMPORTANT MESSAGE – We were made aware Saturday afternoon that our website is experiencing an issue on the Home page. It may cause some confusion about accessing the virtual concert- “LoveFest Goes To The Movies”. You will still be able to view the concert anytime while it is available through midnight Sunday. Mission Quite Possible

Good Morning Mr. Phelps: Monday night brings back our musical game show, “Guess Who? The Return”. For the first half of our program CMSSL musicians Ann Fink. Kristin Ahlstrom, Andrew François, Susan Gordon, James Czyzewski and Davin Rubicz will perform five relatively short examples of five different composers from five different eras. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to guess the name of the composers. As to the second half of the concert after intermission, you will not have to guess who composed the Brahms Trio for Violin, Cello & Piano in C Minor #3 Op. 101. SPOILER ALERT…it was Brahms. Peter Henderson will join Kristin and James for this work. With your program booklet, you will receive a “Guess Who?” Scorecard and a pretty pink pen (which you can keep) to record your responses. At the intermission, please turn your cards in to the ushers to be tallied. There will be a drawing for a number of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes in the Pillsbury Theater at the post-concert reception to honor our Concert Sponsor, Tom and Carol Voss. All ticket holders are invited to the party. URGENT REQUEST: PLEASE…PLEASE…take two (2) minutes to vote your repertoire choices for the May 22 “All About You Again” concert. There a couple of questions included that will help guide us on planning our format and programming in the future. We would appreciate your input on those as well as your votes for the May 22 concert repertoire. Voting closes in a few days (February 21) so HEAD HERE to make your choices for the concert repertoire and pass this note along to friends and family who may like to participate. This message will self-destruct in….well…… actually…no it won’t. (This message is parodying a popular TV series that ran from 1966-1973 called Mission Impossible – theme music by Lalo Schifrin) Over and out, Marc

A CHICAGO/BERLIN MUSE – A REVIEW – REMEMBER THE WINDS

Good Afternoon All, I just returned from Chicago where I heard the touring Berlin Philharmoniker perform the Mahler 7th Symphony. This is a not an often programed work. I have played it a few times in my career but never heard it from the audience.  I also have never heard the Berliners live so it was a nice treat. After the concert, I had a chance to visit with colleagues from the Chicago Symphony and the Berlin orchestra, which exhibited, yet again, how music brings us together and nurtures our humanity.  So…. this seems like a good time to wish everyone a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING. A few months ago, I asked for your help regarding classical music reviews (which so many of you responded…thank you). All of our local classical music organizations are working to urge media entities to support us with reviews. A reviewer from radio station KDHX attended our November 7 concert and posted a review. https://kdhx.org/articles/classical/2883-review-the-chamber-music-society-of-st-louis-blows-a-mighty-wind I am told that it will encourage the station to review more classical concerts if they see a large number of clicks on the review (the lack of which was the catalyst for the Post-Dispatch to significantly cut back on reviewing classical events). So, please click on the link to read it and pass it along to others who may be interested. This will help all our local classical music organizations. A reminder that access to the virtual stream of this November 7 “The Winds Blow Back” concert with Leonard Slatkin concert ends at midnight Sunday. So if you have not viewed it yet, check your ticket or virtual pass for the password and enjoy the music. Wishing you a peaceful and pleasant Thanksgiving, Marc
