Going, Going, Gone and Your Picks

Hello All, The seating process for the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis 2022-23 Season in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall at the 560 Music Center has begun. Seats are flying off the shelves…well…the seats are not actually going anywhere…but their availability is. To ensure we can fulfill your seating preference, call us to renew/subscribe over the phone. 314-941-6309 That is the best way to put you in the process going on right now to get your desired seating area. You can also order online but the software does not allow for indicating seating preference. Call us to do that if you desire a certain area. By the way, the 560 has some very cool software to view the seats in the space. CLICK HERE to view. Thursday evening at 5:30pm and repeated on Monday at 10am, you can hear the The Chamber At Home  broadcast of a program where you chose the repertoire. “All About You” features two giants of the chamber repertoire, the stunning Schumann Piano Quintet in Eb Major and Mendelssohn’s Octet also in Eb. Two other works you chose are a trio Beethoven composed for clarinet, cello and piano and the popular and dramatic prelude in C# Minor by Rachmaninoff. The “cast of thousands” you will hear performing are violinists Andrea Jarrett, Becky Boyer Hall, Angie Smart, Jessica Cheng Hellwege, Ann Fink and Hannah Ji. The violists are Chris Tantillo and Susan Gordon and cellists Bjorn Ranheim and Alvin McCall. The pianists are Peter Henderson and Alla Voskoboynikova and clarinetist is Tzuying Huang. The Schumann, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff have fun stories plus some fun facts about the Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn which I share that help connect with the music. So, please get your subscription renewals or orders into the mix and….. I will see you on the radio, Marc

Leonard Slatkin – Monday/Tuesday Concerts

Dear Friends, A quick note to remind you of the “A Tale of Two Suites” concerts Monday and Tuesday evenings with Guest Artist Leonard Slatkin. This concert pair ends our 13th Subscription Season. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, we had to make a change to the program replacing Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale with the charming Holst- St. Paul’s Suite. This last minute change makes the concert a bit shorter than usual so we will dispense with an intermission. Tickets can be purchased by calling CMSSL at 314-941-6309 or through MetroTix. All ticket holders for Monday and Tuesday are invited to the End of Season reception hosted by Audrey Rothbarth honoring Concert Sponsors, Larry and Ellen Condie, Leonard Slatkin and all of our Concert Sponsors this year for whom we were not able to celebrate with a reception. For everyone’s safety, the reception will be outside at the Vertical Garden on the west wall of the Sheldon. Please join Leonard Slatkin and CMSSL musicians for some wonderful music and festivity. Warmest regards, Marc

2022-23 CMSSL Season Announced

Chamber Music Society of St Louis will have a new look in the fall. We are moving our concert series to the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall at 560 Music Center in University City. As you may know, this hall has a wonderful sound, a magnificent Steinway piano and very comfortable seats. It will provide patrons, musicians and guest artists with excellent facilities as well as ample FREE garage and on-street parking. We believe this will provide a wonderful concert experience! Increasing scheduling challenges have instigated a change in our format. In 2022-23 we will move away from Monday/Tuesday concert pairs to single Monday night performances only. Leonard Slatkin and Nicholas McGegan will join us again this coming season, as well as Ragtime expert Andrew Greene leading CMSSL musicians performing the music to One Week, a silent movie with Buster Keaton. Jazz piano duo Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi return with their entertaining piano four hands, and, of course, we’ll provide an opportunity for you to choose the pieces for a program with “All About You Again.” We received lots of comments on how much fun everyone had participating in the musical contest “Guess Who?” last year. This year we plan to bring it back again, but in a version that is a little more ‘guess’ friendly…”Guess Who? The Return.” View 2022-23 Calendar of Events Here To make concerts available to those who may not be able to attend in person, we offer the Virtual Performance Pass; access to all 12 programs streamed via our website one week following each live performance. Sad News

Painting CMSSL commissioned for Michael F. Neidorff by artist Stefan Geissbühler READ The St Louis Community and the country has lost a great philanthropist. Michael F. Neidorff passed away here in St. Louis. Michael and Noémi Neidorff have been great friends and supporters of the Chamber from our very early days. From the 9 straight years before COVID of hosting our annual Donor Appreciation Concert in Centene Plaza to a transformative multi-year financial commitment, they both loved and believed in the power of music. Their commitment to the arts and music in particular has made St. Louis a better place to live. From the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra to Opera Theatre of St. Louis to Radio Arts Foundation-Classic 107.3 to Chamber Music Society of St. Louis and so many others, we are indebted to Michael and the Neidorff family. I will never forget the wisdom Michael imparted to me in 2010, early in my tenure as Executive & Artistic Director of CMSSL. In a meeting with this visionary leader in his office, he gave me a version of the give someone a fish and they eat for a day…….teach them to fish and they eat for a lifetime philosophy. Our friend, former Clayton Mayor Harold Sanger, called Michael a “magnificent human being.” To say that Michael will be missed is a monumental understatement. As we wind down the 2021-22 Centene Charitable Foundation Chamber Concert Series, we keep Michael and the Neidorff family in our thoughts. CLICK HERE for some information about Michael.

Your Choices… Mostly

Greetings All: We are staring down the last few concerts of Season 13 for Chamber Music Society of St. Louis. The Monday/Tuesday “It’s Still All About You” concert pair brings back the theme started last year in our partnership with Radio Arts Foundation-Classic 107.3 where you decided the repertoire……this time with some caveats. The winning compositions made a program that would have been almost 3 hours long. Therefore, we decided to split them into 2 separate concerts. “It’s Still All About You” Part 1 will feature Brahms String Sextet #2 in G major. The winning piece on this program from the piano and winds category would have been Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds. Given some monumental difficulties, we have had to postpone the Beethoven for another time. However, I think you will be delighted to hear the replacement, which is pianist Brian Woods performing Chopin’s 3rd Piano Sonata. An amazing work with an absolutely dazzling finale. Julie Schuster, Morning Host from our partners at Classic 107.3, will join me onstage to share the music with you this week and again for “It’s Still All About You” Part B later in the month. For this Monday/Tuesday Part 1, Ann Fink, Kyle Lombard, Leo Plashinov, Andrew François, Yin Xiong and Alvin McCall will play the warm and lush Brahms Sextet. The Prelude feature will begin the evening with the Peccatte Quartet, students from our Young Artist Chamber Program. Violinists Micaela Chyu, Nathan Bronstein, violist Delia Zacks and cellist Rachel Li will perform the 1st movement from a Haydn string quartet. For tickets, call CMSSL at 314-941-6309 or online from MetroTix. Please join Julie and me on Monday or Tuesday at 7:30 pm to enjoy the music you chose and the wonderful young musicians of the Peccatte Quartet. All the best, Marc

Monday February 28 – Suites, Spirituals and Dances

Dear Friends, Historically, the arts have been a means to address social and community issues. With the sociopolitical events and discussions that have occurred in our country over the past few years, artists and arts organizations have felt a responsibility to augment their recognition of these issues and address them. February has been recognized as Black History Month since 1976 (America’s Bicentennial) when President Gerald Ford expanded the celebration from a week to a month in tribute to African American men and women who have made significant contributions. President Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” This presents The Chamber with an ideal opportunity to highlight the works of a number of Black composers, some of whom have not been in the mainstream of concert performances. The music to be performed on Monday’s concert “Suites, Spirituals and Dances” is not there just because it was written by Black composers…….it is on the program because it is music that I think you will enjoy hearing. In my remarks to the audience at our Valentine’s Day concert a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned Duke Ellington’s quote ““There are simply two kinds of music…. good music and the other kind”. The repertoire on Monday is the in The Duke’s former category. To perform all the composers and pieces available would have amounted to an endless concert. We hope you walk out of our concerts wishing there was more.  So, for some works we will perform a single movement so that we can include more composers. We are grateful to Concert Sponsor Dorsey and Sondra Ellis for their support of this celebration and hope you will join us Monday for “Suites, Spirituals and Dances” to hear CMSSL musicians Patti Wolf, Megan Stout, Jennifer Nitchman, Angie Smart, Adrian Walker, Susan Gordon, Alvin McCall and Tzuying Huang perform music by some very familiar and some less familiar composers. Best regards, Marc Marc Gordon Executive & Artistic Director Chamber Music Society of St. Louis

Don’t Forget the Stream and a Postponement

Hello to Everyone, I wanted to remind everyone who had a ticket to last Monday’s LoveFest is Forever in-person concert and all those who purchased tickets to Virtual Concert that the stream becomes accessible at 12 AM Tuesday morning and will be available for 72 hours; so through midnight Thursday. CMSSL virtual performances are accessed from our WEBSITE. The password is on your in-person ticket, Virtual Subscription Pass or receipt if you purchased online. If this will be your first time to view, we suggest you watch this 5-MINUTE TUTORIAL. Of course live and in-person is best but….. the virtual stream gives our concertgoers a different perspective….. especially if you prefer the sound further back or in the balcony when you are in the hall. Closer views of the strings in the Tchaikovsky gives such a detailed look at the instruments performing that exciting work. Our “keyboard cam” is perfect for all of you who love to be able to see the pianist’s hands on the keyboard. In the case of  Guest Artists Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi, there is a lot to take in. Their complex choreography of moving arms, hands and flying fingers is something to see and the virtual gets you “up close and personal”. Great fun! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  Do to the proverbial circumstances beyond our control we have to postpone the Clarinet Solo and Ensemble Master Class scheduled for Monday February 21. We will keep you informed when the new date is set. See you next in cyberspace, Marc Marc Gordon Executive & Artistic Director Chamber Music Society of St. Louis
